Description

Demak is a historic city located on the north coast of Java in Indonesia. Once the capital of the Demak Sultanate, it is regarded as the birthplace of Islamic rulein Java. Founded in the late 15th century, Demak was a key center of Islamic influence in Southeast Asia. Today, it remains a cultural and religious hub for Muslims in Indonesia.

Modern Remains

Modern-day Demak is home to several important historical landmarks, including the Great Mosque of Demak (Masjid Agung Demak), one of the oldest and most significant Islamic mosques in Indonesia, dating back to the 15th century. The Sunan Kalijaga tomb and Sultan Demak’s royal tombs are also key sites for pilgrims. Visitors can also explore the Demak Old Market, which reflects the town’s historical trade role.
