Description
Roluos is an ancient archaeological site located in the southeastern part of Cambodia, around 13 km from modern-day Siem Reap. It was one of the earliest capitals of the Khmer Empire during the 9th century CE, and the first major political and religious center under King Yasovarman I. The site is known for its distinctive temple architecture and significant urban planning.
Modern Remains
Modern remains at Roluos include Preah Ko, a temple dedicated to Hindu gods, Bakong, a large stepped pyramid temple, and Lolei, located on an artificial island in a reservoir. Visitors can explore the ancient brick structures, carvings, and hydraulic systems still visible today. The site is less crowded than Angkor Wat, offering a peaceful setting for tourists to learn about the Khmer Empire’s early history.
