Description

Harar is an ancient walled city in eastern Ethiopia, known as the capital of the Emirate of Harar from 1647–1887 CE. This city, surrounded by impressive walls, is one of the most important cultural and historical centers in Ethiopia, famed for its Islamic heritageand ancient architecture. Harar is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique blend of cultural and architectural significance.

Modern Remains

Today, Harar is a vibrant city with several historic landmarks, such as the Old Walled City, Harar Jugol, which houses over 80 mosques and 102 shrines. The Harar Ras Hoteland Harar Museum provide insight into the city's Islamic and cultural heritage. Visitors can also experience the Harar Hyena Man, who feeds wild hyenas outside the city, a unique local tradition and attraction.
