Belmopan is the capital city of Belize, located inland, about 50 miles west of the Caribbean coast. Established in 1970, Belmopan is a relatively new city compared to other capitals in Central America. It was chosen as the capital after Hurricane Hattie devastated the previous capital, Belize City, in 1961.
