Description

Bactra, known today as Balkh in northern Afghanistan, was the capital of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom from the 3rd century BCE. Situated strategically at the crossroads of Central Asia, Bactra was a thriving city and a major cultural, commercial, and political hub, reflecting a blend of Greek, Persian, and Central Asian influences following Alexander the Great’s conquest.

Modern Remains

Modern-day Balkh is home to various archaeological remains that reflect its ancient grandeur. Excavations have uncovered remnants of ancient walls, structures, and temples, as well as coins and inscriptions from the Greco-Bactrian period. While much of the site has been damaged over time, especially due to invasions and conflicts, the area remains an important archaeological site for understanding the fusion of Hellenistic and Central Asian cultures.
