Description
Axum was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, located in what is now northern Ethiopia. The kingdom flourished from around the 1st to the 7th centuries CE and was one of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world. Axum was a major trade hub, connecting the Roman Empire, India, and Arabia, and was known for its impressive obelisks, royal palaces, and advanced architecture.
Modern Remains
Modern-day Axum contains remarkable archaeological remains, including towering obelisks, royal tombs, and the ruins of ancient churches. The Stelae Park, featuring several towering obelisks, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other notable remains include the ruins of the Queen of Sheba’s palace and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, where the Ark of the Covenant is believed by some to be housed. These sites continue to be a symbol of Ethiopia’s ancient heritage and historical legacy.
