Modern Remains

Thanjavur is home to several historical landmarks, the most famous of which is the Brihadeeswarar Temple. Built by Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century, this temple is an architectural marvel and one of the largest temples in India. The Royal Palace of Thanjavur, though partially in ruins, houses the Saraswathi Mahal Library, which holds ancient manuscripts and historical texts. The Art Gallery, located in the palace complex, exhibits bronze sculptures from the Chola period and other ancient artifacts. The Big Temple Tank and the nearby Nandi statue also offer visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the Chola era. Modern Thanjavur also celebrates its artistic legacy with traditional Tanjore painting studios and workshops that attract art lovers and collectors from around the world.
