Description

Argos, located in the northeastern Peloponnese, was one of the oldest cities in ancient Greece and the chief city of the Kingdom of Argolis. It thrived as a powerful Mycenaean center and later became a prominent Dorian Greek city. Known for its early contributions to sculpture, architecture, and the arts, Argos maintained continuous habitation from the Bronze Age onward.

Modern Remains

Modern Argos preserves substantial archaeological remains, including a well-preserved theater, ancient temples, Mycenaean ruins, and classical fortifications. The Larisa fortress above the city and the Heraion (sanctuary of Hera) nearby also testify to its ancient importance. Argos remains a key site for studying Greek urbanism and its continuity from the Bronze Age through the classical world.
