Description
Phanagoria was an ancient Greek colony on the Taman Peninsula (modern-day southern Russia) that later became the capital of Old Great Bulgaria under Khan Kubrat in the 7th century. Originally a thriving trade hub on the Black Sea, it was repurposed by the Bulgars as a political and military center. Its strategic coastal location made it an important base for the semi-nomadic Bulgar people during their transition to settled rule.
Modern Remains
Today, Phanagoria is an important archaeological site in southern Russia. Excavations have uncovered remnants of city walls, basilicas, inscriptions, and artifacts from both the Greek and Bulgar periods. The site offers valuable insight into the transition from classical antiquity to the early medieval era. Though the city is no longer inhabited, ongoing archaeological work continues to reveal its historical layers and significance in the broader story of the Bulgar and Byzantine worlds.
