Description
Patara was an ancient city located on the southwestern coast of Turkey, in the region historically known as Lycia. It served as one of the most important cities of the Kingdom of Lycia and was strategically positioned along the Mediterranean coast. Patara was known for its port, which facilitated trade and military activities, and it was a center of culture, religion, and governance in the Lycian League.
Modern Remains
Today, the archaeological site of Patara is a significant tourist destination in Turkey. It features well-preserved ruins, including a theater, city walls, temples, and the remnants of its ancient harbor. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the remnants of the Lycian and Roman baths can also be found. The ancient harbor and the famous 18-kilometer-long Patara Beach are important attractions. Patara’s remains reflect its past importance as a religious, commercial, and cultural hub.
