Description

Pagan, located in modern-day Myanmar, was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom from the 9th to the 13th century. Situated along the Irrawaddy River, Pagan became a prosperous and powerful city, famous for its monumental religious architecture, including thousands of temples, stupas, and monasteries built during its zenith.

Modern Remains

Today, Pagan (often called Bagan) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its vast archaeological site that contains over 2,000 temples and pagodas. These structures, many of which are still standing or being restored, are among the most significant and recognizable landmarks in Myanmar. The site continues to be an important pilgrimage and tourist destination.
