Oviedo, located in northern Spain, was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias during the 8th and 9th centuries. Situated in a mountainous region, it was strategically placed to defend against Islamic incursions from the south. As the seat of the Asturian monarchy, it became a key center of Christian resistance and the early stages of the Reconquista.
Modern Remains
Modern Oviedo retains much of its medieval charm, with significant historical landmarks such as the Cathedral of San Salvador, the Church of Santa María del Naranco, and the Church of San Miguel de Lillo. These structures reflect its pivotal role in early Christian Spain. The city also celebrates its Asturian heritage with annual cultural festivals.
