Description
Anshan was a major city in the ancient region of Elam, located in southwestern Iran, near modern-day Shiraz. It emerged as a key center during the Proto-Elamite period (c. 3100–2700 BCE) and later played a dominant role in the Elamite civilization. Anshan was a vital political and religious hub, known for its early writing systems and cultural developments.
Modern Remains
The ruins of Anshan are located at the site of Tal-i Malyan in Fars Province, Iran. Archaeological excavations have uncovered Proto-Elamite tablets, monumental architecture, and pottery. These finds provide insight into early urbanization and state formation in the Iranian plateau. The site remains essential to understanding both Elamite civilization and the early roots of Persian imperial identity.
