Okiato, also known as Old Russell, was the first capital of the Colony of New Zealand, chosen in 1840 by Lieutenant Governor William Hobson. Though modest in size, it briefly served as the administrative center of the new colony before the capital was moved.

Modern Remains

Today, Okiato is a quiet settlement with few surviving colonial structures. Historical markers and local signs commemorate its role as the first capital. Nearby Russell has become the better-known heritage town, preserving the broader colonial history of the area.
