Description

Novgorod was a major political and cultural center in Kievan Rus' (879–1240) and later became the capital of the Novgorod Republic (1136–1478), a powerful medieval state known for its early form of republican governance. It functioned as a semi-independent city-state, ruled by a veche (citizen assembly) and a prince chosen by the people.

Modern Remains

Novgorod preserves its legacy with the Kremlin (Detinets), one of Russia’s oldest fortresses, and the St. Sophia Cathedral (built in 1045), a masterpiece of medieval architecture. The city's UNESCO-listed historic district includes ancient monasteries, frescoes, and birch-bark documents that offer insight into medieval life. Novgorod remains a key site in Russian history and identity.
