Aného, located in modern-day Togo, was once the capital of Togoland, a German protectorate from 1884 to 1914. Situated along the Gulf of Guinea, Aného played a crucial role in the early colonial administration, serving as a key port and trade center. It was also an important hub for the exchange of goods, especially palm oil, ivory, and slaves, during the pre-colonial and colonial periods.
Modern Remains
Today, Aného is a small town, and though much of its colonial infrastructure has been altered, traces of its past remain. Some colonial-era buildings and sites, such as the German fort and administrative structures, still stand. The town's cultural heritage reflects its colonial and pre-colonial history, with remnants of trade routes and local traditions preserving the city’s significance in the region's history.
