Middag, the capital of the Kingdom of Middag, was a central settlement in 17th-century western Taiwan, located in present-day Taichung. It served as the political and cultural hub of a confederation of indigenous plains tribes, including the Papora and Babuza. Positioned near the Dadu River, it was a strategic site for trade and diplomacy with Dutch colonists and other regional powers.
Modern Remains
Today, Taichung bears few visible remains of Middag, but the region preserves its legacy through archaeological finds and recognition of local indigenous heritage. Cultural exhibits, academic research, and ongoing efforts by indigenous communities help revive and honor the memory of Middag’s historical and cultural importance.
