Mascara is a city in western Algeria that served as the capital of the Emirate of Abdelkader, founded by the Algerian leader Emir Abdelkader in the early 19th century. The city became a stronghold during the Algerian resistance against French colonization.

Today, Mascara is a vibrant city in Algeria, with remnants of its historical significance still visible. Though much of the Emirate’s infrastructure has been lost over time, the city's historical connection to Abdelkader is commemorated in museums, monuments, and the continued reverence for Abdelkader as a national hero in Algeria.
