Description

Amphissia was an ancient city in the region of Locris, in central Greece, situated near the Gulf of Corinth. It was an important city within the Kingdom of Locria, which was divided into two regions: the Opuntian and the Ozolian Locrians. Amphissia, located in the Ozolian part, played a key role in the local politics, especially during the classical Greek period, though it was overshadowed by other major Greek cities.

Modern Remains

Today, the site of Amphissia is near the modern town of Amfissa in central Greece. Archaeological remains include the remnants of ancient fortifications, temples, and public buildings. Although the city itself did not maintain lasting prominence, the ruins offer valuable insights into the architecture and urban planning of a classical Greek city, as well as its involvement in the regional power struggles.
