Description

Laguna, a city in southern Brazil, was briefly the capital of the short-lived Juliana Republic in 1839. This separatist state emerged during the Ragamuffin War, a larger rebellion against the Empire of Brazil in the province of Santa Catarina.

Modern Remains

Today, Laguna preserves elements of this revolutionary past through monuments and historical buildings such as the Anita Garibaldi Museum, dedicated to the local heroine who fought for the republic. Colonial architecture and commemorative sites keep the memory of the Juliana Republic alive in the city’s cultural identity.
