Description

Kukawa was the capital of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, one of the most powerful and enduring empires in Central Africa. Located on the shores of Lake Chad in present-day Nigeria, Kukawa served as a major political, cultural, and economic center for the empire, particularly during the 16th to 19th centuries.

Modern Remains

Today, Kukawa is a smaller town in northeastern Nigeria. While many of the original structures from the Kanem-Bornu period have been lost, the region still holds archaeological significance. The remnants of the old city, including some royal tombs and traditional structures, serve as a reminder of Kukawa's once-central role in African history.
