Description

Kufa, founded in 638 CE in present-day Iraq, was a garrison town established by the Rashidun Caliphate. Located along the Euphrates River, it quickly grew into a major political, religious, and cultural center, with a diverse population of Arab settlers, scholars, and administrators.

Modern Remains

Modern Kufa retains religious and historical significance, particularly for Shia Muslims. The Great Mosque of Kufa, where Ali was assassinated, remains a major pilgrimage site. Archaeological and religious landmarks in the city continue to reflect its early Islamic legacy.
