Description

Kragujevac, located in central Serbia, served as the first capital of the modern Principality of Serbia in the early 19th century. Positioned strategically along the Lepenica River, it quickly grew into a political, cultural, and administrative hub during Serbia’s struggle for autonomy from the Ottoman Empire.

Modern Remains

Today, Kragujevac retains important historical landmarks such as the Old Assembly building, the Amidža Konak, and the First Grammar School of Serbia. The city is also home to the Šumarice Memorial Park, commemorating WWII atrocities. These sites preserve its legacy as the cradle of modern Serbian statehood.
