Description

Kiev (now Kyiv) was the capital and cultural heart of Kievan Rus’, a powerful federation of East Slavic tribes from the late 9th to the mid-13th century. Located along the Dnieper River, it became a major political, trade, and religious center, especially after the Christianization of Rus’ in 988 under Prince Vladimir the Great.

Modern Remains

Modern Kyiv retains many monuments from its medieval past, including the Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Golden Gate. Despite damage from wars and invasions, the city's ancient layout and religious architecture reflect its historical legacy.
