Description
Kaveripoompattinam, also known as Puhar, was the capital of the early Chola Kingdom, located in present-day Tamil Nadu, India. Situated at the mouth of the Kaveri River, the city was a thriving port and trading hub during the early Chola period, particularly from the 2nd century BCE to the 4th century CE. The city was known for its wealth, architectural marvels, and strategic importance in maritime trade.
Modern Remains
Today, Kaveripoompattinam is an archaeological site near the modern town of Poompuhar. Excavations have uncovered remnants of the city, including ancient port infrastructure, pottery, and sculptures. Despite being submerged by the sea in some areas due to coastal erosion, the site continues to provide valuable insights into early Tamil civilization and the Chola dynasty's maritime heritage. The Poompuhar Museum houses many of these findings.
