Description
Karvuna, historically known as a medieval fortress and port on the Black Sea coast, was an important center in present-day Bulgaria. It played a significant role in regional trade and defense, particularly during the Second Bulgarian Empire. Though its prominence declined over time, remnants of its past still echo in the region, reflecting a rich history of maritime commerce and cultural influence.
Modern Remains
Today, the remnants of Karvuna can be seen in the archaeological sites around the modern town of Kavarna, Bulgaria. Although much of the medieval city has been lost, researchers have uncovered ruins of fortifications, churches, and other structures that provide insight into the city’s role in the medieval period. The region’s fortifications and artifacts continue to draw attention from historians and archaeologists studying the medieval history of Dobruja and its transition from a Romanian principality to Ottoman control.
