Description

Karnburg was the capital of the Principality of Carantania, an early medieval Slavic principality located in the region of modern-day Carinthia, Austria. Carantania existed from the 7th to the 9th century and was a key political entity for the Slavs in the Alps, known for its unique system of governance, which included a form of tribal democracy.

Modern Remains

Today, Karnburg’s historical legacy can be seen in the ruins of Karnburg Castle, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The town is also home to the Church of St. Peter, which is built on the site of an ancient Slavic temple, marking the area's early Christianization. Though much of the original structures of the Principality of Carantania have not survived, Karnburg remains an important archaeological and historical site, reflecting the Slavic heritage and political evolution of the region.
