Description

Kapilavatthu was the capital of the Monarchical Republic of the Shakya clan, located in present-day Lumbini Province, Nepal. It is famously known as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha. The city was a significant political and cultural center during the 6th-5th centuries BCE, where the Shakya clan governed a small republican kingdom.

Modern Remains

Today, the site of Kapilavatthu, near Lumbini, is an important archaeological and pilgrimage destination. Key remains include ancient stupas, monasteries, and the Ashokan Pillar, which marks the historical significance of the area in the life of the Buddha. The site continues to be a place of religious and historical reverence for Buddhists worldwide.
