Description

Kandy was the last independent kingdom in Sri Lanka, situated in the central highlands. It was founded in the late 15th century and lasted until its annexation by the British in 1815. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Kandy became a prominent political and religious center, especially for the Sinhalese people. The kingdom's capital, also called Kandy, remains a significant historical and cultural hub.

Modern Remains

Today, Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for the Temple of the Tooth, which houses the relic of the Buddha. The city retains much of its historical charm, with ancient temples, palaces, and gardens, although some structures have faced challenges due to modernization and tourism. The annual Kandy Esala Perahera, a grand procession, keeps the kingdom's traditions alive.
