Description

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is located on the northwest coast of Java. Formerly known as Batavia during Dutch colonial rule and Sunda Kelapa before that, it developed as a major trading port and administrative hub. With roots stretching back to the Kingdom of Sunda, Jakarta evolved through Portuguese, Dutch, and Japanese occupation into Indonesia’s political and economic heart.

Modern Remains

Modern Jakarta is a sprawling megacity, but remnants of its layered past endure. Kota Tua (Old Town) preserves Dutch colonial architecture like the Fatahillah Museum and old VOC warehouses. Monas (National Monument) symbolizes independence, while historical ports like Sunda Kelapa Harbor still operate. Though heavily urbanized, Jakarta remains deeply connected to its precolonial and colonial past.
