Description

Indraprastha, meaning City of Indra, was a legendary city in ancient India, traditionally identified with the Kuru Kingdom and prominently featured in the Mahabharata. Said to have been built by the Pandavas on the banks of the Yamuna River, it was described as a grand and prosperous city, serving as their capital during their rule. It is commonly associated with the site of modern-day Delhi.

Modern Remains

While no definitive archaeological evidence has confirmed Indraprastha’s exact historical location, it is widely believed to be part of Old Delhi, near Purana Qila (Old Fort). Excavations in that area have revealed layers of continuous habitation, including Painted Grey Ware pottery associated with the Mahabharata period. Indraprastha remains embedded in the cultural memory of India and continues to be referenced in literature, religion, and modern historical discourse.
