Description

Houston, founded in 1836, served as the capital of the Republic of Texas from 1837 to 1839. Located along the Buffalo Bayou in what is now southeastern Texas, the city was established during the tumultuous period following the Texas Revolution, which resulted in Texas gaining independence from Mexico. Houston quickly became a center for government, trade, and military activities in the young republic.

Modern Remains

Today, Houston is a sprawling, modern city known for its oil industry, business sectors, and cultural diversity. While much of its early history is overshadowed by rapid growth, remnants of the past are still present. The Sam Houston Park and the Heritage Society Museum preserve elements of the city's early architecture and history. Modern Houston serves as the largest city in Texas, with historical landmarks integrated into the contemporary urban landscape.
