Description

Al Bayda is a city in eastern Libya, situated in the Green Mountains (Jebel Akhdar) region. During the mid-20th century, it rose to prominence as a key city in the Kingdom of Libya (1951–1969), especially under King Idris I, who intended to make it the country’s administrative capital. The city was known for its moderate climate, religious institutions, and royal presence.

Modern Remains

Today, Al Bayda retains architectural and institutional remnants of the Kingdom era, including old government buildings and religious centers linked to the Senussi movement. Though it later lost national capital status, it remains an important regional hub. Some royal and colonial-era structures survive, and the city continues to hold symbolic significance for those who view the monarchy period as a time of stability.
