Gusu was situated strategically along the lower Yangtze River, giving it access to trade and military routes that were crucial during the period.
Modern Remains
Modern-day Suzhou, which grew out of Gusu, retains numerous historical sites that reflect its deep cultural roots. The ancient city has well-preserved classical gardens, temples, and pagodas, many of which trace their heritage back to the time of Gusu and the state of Xu. The influence of Gusu’s ancient culture is still visible today in Suzhou’s art, silk production, and architecture, making it one of China's most significant cultural cities.
