Description
Bingerville is a town near Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), which served as the capital of the French colony from 1900 to 1934. Named after French colonial governor Louis-Gustave Binger, it was developed as an administrative center with colonial-style buildings, botanical gardens, and planned infrastructure reflecting French colonial urbanism.
Modern Remains
Today, Bingerville retains many colonial-era buildings, including the former governor’s palace, schools, and churches, which reflect early 20th-century French architecture. The botanical gardens, established during colonial rule, still serve as a public park and research center. These sites, along with museums and preserved streetscapes, offer a window into Ivory Coast’s colonial past and its transition toward independence.
