Description
Fujiwara-kyō was the imperial capital of Japan from 694 to 710 CE, located in present-day Kashihara, Nara Prefecture. It was the first capital laid out on a Chinese-style grid plan, reflecting strong Tang dynasty influence and Japan’s growing centralization under the Yamato court.
Modern Remains
The site of Fujiwara-kyō is now an archaeological park, with foundations of palace buildings and roads uncovered. While no major structures remain, stone markers and reconstructions help visitors visualize its original layout. It remains a culturally significant site, offering insight into early Japanese urban planning and imperial power.
