Description
Fez, located in northern Morocco, was founded in the late 8th century by Idris I and became a vibrant political, religious, and cultural center. Under the Idrisid dynasty, it emerged as one of the earliest Islamic capitals in the Maghreb. The city thrived again under the Saadi Sultanate in the 16th century, serving as a capital and symbol of Moroccan unity and Islamic scholarship.
Modern Remains
Fez’s medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest intact medieval cities in the world. Landmarks like al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, Bou Inania Madrasa, and the old city walls testify to its Idrisid and Saadi heritage. The city remains a spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco.
