Description

Mobile is a port city located in Alabama along the Gulf of Mexico. Originally established by the French as Fort Louis de la Louisiane, it became the capital of French Louisiana from 1702 to 1711. The city was a critical center for the French in North America before it was moved to New Orleans. Mobile played a vital role in early colonial trade and interactions with Indigenous groups.

Modern Remains

Visitors can explore the Mobile Historic District and the Fort Condereconstruction, which is based on the original French fort from the early 18th century. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, dating from French colonial times, is a prominent landmark. Bienville Square and the Mobile Bay area offer scenic views and historical walking tours that bring the city’s colonial past to life.
