Description
Cidade do Acre, the capital of the Republic of Acre (a short-lived independent state in the early 20th century), is located in the westernmost part of Brazil, near the borders with Bolivia and Peru. Established in 1882, it served as the center of the Acrean independence movement during the region’s struggle against Bolivian control before being incorporated into Brazil.
Modern Remains
Today, Rio Branco (the modern-day capital of Acre) holds the remnants of the era, including historic buildings and museums such as the Palácio Rio Branco. There are also memorials dedicated to the resistance and the Rubber Boom that influenced the region. Although the Republic of Acre no longer exists, its legacy is preserved in the state’s cultural identity and historical sites.
