Description

Yang-Yang, located in the western part of Senegal, was the capital of the Kingdom of Jolof, one of the most powerful and influential empires in West Africa from around 1360 to 1549. This historic site, though now largely a small village, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the medieval Jolof kingdom. Its natural beauty and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean make it a peaceful yet historically rich destination.

Modern Remains

While modern-day Yang-Yang has few surviving structures from its time as a capital, visitors can still explore the area’s archaeological sites, such as ancient burial grounds and remnants of royal palaces. Local museums and cultural centers in the surrounding area highlight the kingdom's history. The nearby Goree Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and provides a broader context to the region's historical significance in the transatlantic slave trade.
