Description
Chiang Mai, located in northern Thailand, was the capital of the Lan Na Kingdom (13th–18th century), one of the most significant historical kingdoms in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai, it became a major cultural, religious, and political center in the region. Today, it is known for its rich heritage, temples, and natural beauty.
Modern Remains
Chiang Mai today preserves much of its historical legacy, with ancient city walls, moats, and numerous temples like Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang. The Old City retains its traditional grid layout and many historic buildings. The city's vibrant festivals, like Yi Peng (lantern festival), continue to reflect its cultural roots, blending the legacy of the Lan Na Kingdom with modern Thai life.
