Description
Tamassos is an ancient city located in central Cyprus, once the capital of the Kingdom of Tamassos. This important city-state thrived during the Archaic and Classical periods. Today, it is an archaeological siterenowned for its well-preserved remains, offering a window into the religious, political, and cultural life of ancient Cypriots. It was strategically located near copper mines, a key to its wealth.
Modern Remains
The site features ruins of a large temple dedicated to Aphrodite, an impressive necropolis, and several house foundations. Archaeologists have uncovered a wealth of inscriptions, ceramics, and sculptures. The Museum of Cyprus in Nicosia houses many artifacts from Tamassos, including inscribed altars and statues. The ruins offer a serene exploration of ancient Cypriot life, with the temple ruins offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
