Description

Champasak, located in southern Laos along the Mekong River, is a historic town that once served as the royal seat of the Champasak Kingdom. Surrounded by lush landscapes and cultural landmarks, it was an important regional center, blending Lao, Khmer, and Theravāda Buddhist influences in its architecture and society.

Modern Remains

Today, Champasak is best known for the Wat Phou temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient Khmer temple predates the kingdom but became a spiritual centerpiece for it. Remains of royal buildings, colonial-era villas, and Buddhist temples still dot the area, offering a quiet but rich historical experience.
