Description
Jorhat, located in the northeastern state of Assam, India, was the capital of the Ahom Kingdomduring the 19th century. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Jorhat is often regarded as the gateway to Majuli, the world's largest river island. The town played a crucial role during the decline of the Ahom Kingdom and the subsequent colonial era under the British.
Modern Remains
Today, Jorhat is home to several historical landmarks. Visitors can explore the Jorhat Rajbari, the former royal palace of the Ahom rulers. The Tocklai Tea Research Centre, dedicated to Assam's tea industry, is another key attraction. The Mouluwa and Deopukhuri Tanks offer a glimpse into the ancient water systems, while Majuli Island, just across the river, is a UNESCO-listed site with monasteries and rich cultural traditions.
