Raigad Fort, located in the Sahyadri mountain range, was the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Known for its strategic location, this fort was built in the 14th century but became famous as the seat of the Maratha kingdom after Shivaji's coronation in 1674. It offers stunning views and a glimpse into Shivaji’s military genius and his empire’s expansion.
Modern Remains
Key landmarks include the Shivaji Maharaj Samadhi (the memorial of Shivaji Maharaj), Rani Vasa (the queen’s quarters), Main Entrance (Maha Darwaza), and the Jagadishwar Temple. The ropeway to the fort’s summit is a modern addition, offering an easy way to reach the fort while enjoying scenic views. The fort complex also features water tanks, step wells, and a royal palace.
