Penukonda, located in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, was once the secondary capital of the Vijayanagara Empire during the 16th century. Surrounded by rocky hills and lush vegetation, it served as a military and administrative center. Though less known compared to Hampi, Penukonda was integral to the empire’s political structure during its decline. The region is known for its historical charm.

Today, Penukonda offers remnants of its royal past, including the Penukonda Fort, with its impressive gates, walls, and structures. Key landmarks include the Durgamma Temple and the Gagan Mahal, an elegant palace that still echoes the grandeur of the Vijayanagara era. Tourists can also explore the ruins of old temples and the majestic view of the surrounding hills from the fort, which attracts history and photography enthusiasts.
