Description

Caparra, located near Guaynabo in Puerto Rico, was the first Spanish settlement on the island, founded in 1508 by Juan Ponce de León. Positioned inland for protection, it served as the capital before moving to San Juan. Today, it is part of the San Juan metropolitan area and known for its historical ruins and archaeological significance.

Modern Remains

The site of Caparra now hosts the Ruinas de Caparra, including the partially restored foundation and walls of Ponce de León’s residence. The area features a small museum—Museo y Parque Histórico Ruinas de Caparra—which displays artifacts, exhibits on early colonial life, and ongoing archaeological work. It remains a vital cultural and educational heritage site.
