Description
Artashat, located in the Ararat Plain of Armenia, was once the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia. Founded in the 2nd century BCE by King Artaxias I, it served as a major center for the kingdom's administration, trade, and culture. The city's strategic location along the Silk Road allowed it to thrive as a political and economic hub.
Modern Remains
While most of Artashat’s ancient structures are lost to time, visitors can still explore the Archaeological Site of Artashat, where remnants of the city’s layout, including foundations of ancient buildings and roads, can be seen. Nearby, the Artashat Bridgecrosses the Vedi River, and the Khor Virap Monastery, located just outside the city, offers stunning views of Mount Ararat and adds a spiritual layer to the region's historical appeal.
