Description
Bujumbura, located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, was the capital of Burundi from independence in 1962 until 2019. Originally established as a military post by the Germans during colonial rule, it later became an administrative center under Belgian control. Post-independence, it grew into Burundi’s largest city and economic hub.
Modern Remains
Today, while the capital has officially moved to Gitega, Bujumbura remains Burundi’s largest and most economically significant city. Colonial architecture, such as government buildings and churches, still stands alongside modern developments. Landmarks like the Livingstone–Stanley Monument and national museums offer insight into the city’s historical layers from pre-colonial, colonial, and post-independence eras.
